My hoya carnosa has wrinkled leaves and my first instinct was to water it, but the soil is still damp from last week. The pot is plastic with drainage, sitting in bright indirect light. I have had it for about six months and it was fine until recently. The leaves are not yellow, just bendy and a little puckered. One vine near the back feels thinner than the others. I am scared to unpot it because I know hoyas can be dramatic about root disturbance, but I also know damp soil plus wrinkled leaves can mean the roots are not working. Would you check roots now or wait?

Damp soil plus wrinkled leaves makes me want to check roots. It does not always mean rot, but it means the plant is not taking up water normally. Be gentle and look at the outer root ball first.

Do not water again until you know what is happening. If roots are compromised, more water will not fix thirst. It just makes the bad situation wetter.

Hoyas like airy mixes. If it is in dense peat, the center can stay wet for a long time. If roots look okay, I would move it into barkier mix and a snug pot.

Check whether the wrinkling is on all leaves or mostly one vine. If it is one vine, that vine may have a stem issue or damaged roots while the rest of the plant is fine.

Take a cutting from the healthy part before doing anything stressful. Not because you are losing it, just because hoya backups are comforting.

After you check, write down what the roots looked like and when you last watered. Hoyas can take time to respond, so notes help you avoid changing the plan every two days.
