My marble queen pothos has three long vines and a very empty pot. The vines are pretty, so I keep avoiding pruning, but the top looks sparse and awkward. If I cut the vines and put cuttings back into the pot, will it actually look fuller? Do I root them in water first or stick them straight into soil? I am nervous about turning a slightly awkward plant into a sad haircut.

Yes, cuttings back into the pot is the usual trick. Root them first if you are nervous. Once they have roots, tuck them around the empty spots and keep the soil lightly moist while they settle.

Make sure each cutting has a node. A leaf with no node will not become a new vine. Cut just below the node and remove the lowest leaf if it will sit in water or soil.

Pruning helps. The plant will usually branch near the cut, and the cut pieces become more plant. It feels scary the first time and normal after that.

Do not bury a bunch of wet unrooted cuttings in heavy soil and then keep it soaked. That is how people make compost.

If you love the length, take a few cuttings from the back or the longest vine first. You do not need to chop everything at once.

I call it the emotional support trim. Take 3 cuttings, see that the plant survives, then suddenly you are a pruning person. ## Buying and Sourcing
