Hello, wonderful plant people! Anastasia here. When my plant collection started growing from one to five, and then from five to twenty, I began to feel a little overwhelmed. Did I water the fern? Does the Monstera need fertilizer? Did I check that Pothos for pests?
It felt like chaos! The solution wasn’t more time, but a better system. I created a simple checklist, breaking down tasks into weekly, monthly, and seasonal check-ins. It was a game-changer. Plant care became a relaxing, mindful ritual instead of a frantic guessing game.
This is that system. This checklist is designed to take the stress out of plant care, giving you a clear, manageable routine that will keep your green friends happy and healthy. Let’s get organized!
🗓️ Your Weekly Plant Check-In
This is your quick, 10-minute walk-through. Do it once or twice a week.
[ ] Check Soil Moisture
This is your top priority. Use the finger test on every single plant. Stick your finger an inch or two into the soil. Is it dry? Time to water. Is it still damp? Leave it alone and check again in a few days. Do not water on a schedule!
[ ] A Quick Pest Inspection
As you check the soil, take a quick peek at the plant. Look at the undersides of leaves and where the leaf meets the stem. Do you see any tiny webs, white fluffy stuff, or weird spots? Catching pests early is key.
[ ] Rotate Your Plants
Give each plant a quarter turn. This ensures all sides get equal light exposure, promoting even, upright growth instead of a permanent lean towards the window.❤️ Your Monthly Plant TLC
Set aside about 30 minutes once a month for these deeper care tasks.
[ ] Dust the Leaves
Leaves covered in dust can’t photosynthesize properly. Gently wipe down the top and bottom of large leaves with a soft, damp cloth. For plants with many tiny leaves, a quick rinse in the shower with lukewarm water works wonders.
[ ] Prune and Tidy Up
Snip off any yellowing or completely dead leaves with clean scissors or shears. This helps the plant redirect its energy to healthy growth and keeps it looking neat.[ ] Fertilize (During Growing Season)
If it’s spring or summer, this is the time to feed your plants. Use a half-strength diluted liquid fertilizer as part of your watering routine for plants that are actively growing.🌸 Your Seasonal Reset
These are bigger tasks to tackle just a few times a year.
[ ] Assess for Repotting (Early Spring)
Spring is the perfect time for a move. Check your plants for signs of being root-bound. Are roots growing out the bottom? Is growth stunted? If so, it’s time to size up.
[ ] Top-Dress the Soil (Spring)
For large plants that are too difficult to repot, you can refresh the soil by “top-dressing.” Carefully scrape off the top 1-2 inches of old soil and replace it with fresh potting mix and some worm castings.[ ] Adjust for Winter (Fall)
As the days get shorter, prepare your plants for their winter rest.
- Reduce Watering: Plants drink much less when they’re not actively growing.
- Stop Fertilizing: They don’t need food while they’re dormant.
- Check Placement: Move plants away from cold drafts from windows or doors, and away from hot, dry air from heating vents.
